Tripod Raising

A tradition we love in Alaska - a lottery that goes back to the days when the railroad was just being installed and the bored workers were pent up during the winter months waiting for "break up." Time is of the essence and you must be pretty accurate in your guess as to what exact minute the ice will break up and move the tripod. The festivities surrounding the raising of the tripod are a real true Alaskan affair. I went down (from Fairbanks) with some friends about 5 or 6 years ago now. They had taught in Nenana years back and new many of the locals and hot spots. We enjoyed a great burger at the Mondo and hit the hall for dancing. On the way back up to Fairbanks that night we had another true Alaskan experience - we hit a moose. Their car was totaled. I still can't believe we got out of that unhurt!
